Nasal polyps are basically swelling of the lining of the nose. They are painless soft growths inside your nose. They’re not usually serious, but they can keep growing and block your nose if not treated. Symptoms of nasal polyps include: blocked nose, runny nose, constant need to swallow (post-nasal drip), reduced sense of smell or taste, nosebleeds and snoring.Mr. Dhanasekar would confirm the diagnosis of nasal polyps with an endoscopic examination in clinic. The treatment initially would be oral steroids, steroid drops followed by a steroid nasal spray. If the nasal blockage and other associated symptoms do not get better, he would request a CT scan of your sinuses. This is to establish the extent of blockage of the sinus drainage pathways by the polyps. The operation to remove the polyps will be done endoscopically and the sinuses will be drained at the same time to restore ventilation of the sinuses. The procedure is called Endoscopic Nasal Polypectomy with Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery [FESS].
